The Federation of Awarding Bodies Conference 2016 took place last week at the Marriott Hotel in Leicester. As always, the event was well attended by awarding organisations from across the sector. The speaker list was impressive as ever with this year’s event also attracting a record number of exhibitors.

Outgoing Chair of FAB, Fiona Ballantine Dykes, addressed a packed hall on the opening morning. She was followed by Sally Collier, Chief Regulator at Ofqual, who after only 5 months in position, was attending her first FAB Conference. Mark Dawe, CEO of the Association for Employment and Learning Providers (AELP) also addressed the hall, discussing the challenges ahead for the technical and vocational education sector. Apprenticeship reform featured heavily on the agenda throughout the two days. Many delegates took the opportunity to voice their concerns around end point assessments in the apprenticeship sector.

Friday’s keynotes began with Editor of FE Week, Nick Linford followed by the DfE’s Warwick Sharp who detailed the recommendations from the Sainsbury Report. Finally, Shakira Martin from NUS drew the morning’s sessions to a close with a refreshing keynote highlighting the need to keep our learners at the core of our system.

The Federation of Awarding Bodies AGM took place on Thursday afternoon. It was there that the organisation appointed its new Chair and Vice Chair in the form of Paul Eeles and Terry Fennell.
